Finally applying! and a couple of questions
Unless things get lost in the mail, we are applying THIS week to begin the process of becoming foster parents. We want to adopt eventually, but we know that foster care for the child's benefit will be our first responsibility.
I am really excited!!! Now I get to start building up a stash for just about any size. Any tips for where to start? HAHAAlso... a question: do you keep pictures of your foster children? Any special organization you use? Baby books don't seem appropriate, but I haven't been able to think of another option. We will probably keep most pictures in our flickr account marked private for obvious reasons. Just thinking about this ahead of time since we are big fans of photography around here and love taking pics of the kids.

Re: Finally applying! and a couple of questions
We don't have our first placement, but something they encouraged in our classes, and something we have done for our DD, was to create a lifebook.
It chronicals their life. Sort of a scrapbook of their time with you (and time before placement). We will definately keep pictures that we take, but it is important to also pass those along with the child too, so they can look back on it later. Feel free to PM me if you have questions about putting a lifebook together to fostering in general.

Garage sales are always a great way to build up a stash of extra items for any age of child.

Prefolds! They are cheap enough to buy different sizes and then you can add whatever kind of diapers you normally use when you know the size to buy.

Re: Finally applying! and a couple of questions
New to diaper swappers and I was amazed to find a foster/adoption forum...my husband have been providing foster care for two years now and have had 9 kids total (ranging from 2 days to 15 years old), inlcuding the sib group of 3 that were placed with us last week. As far as keeping a "stash" try to start collecting essentials....toothbrushes, underwear, socks, and whatever array of miscellaneous sizes you come across. I started just keeping big plastic tubs separated by size...
Also, utilize your resources, some school districts have foster youth and homeless child funds available so you can get clothing vouchers and school supplies. |
