What to do when they wont eat what u make

What do you do when your children refuse to eat what you make? I make dinner almost every night and most nights they eat something on their plates. Tonight all three of them came to the table - looked at their plates (pork roast, rice and corn) and walked away saying they didnt want to eat it. All 3 of them!! Now this is not a new meal to them and they have eaten it before (well except Andrew but he usually eats the rice and corn at least). I know they must be hungry since they haven had any thing since 2pm. What do I do? Normally its - dont eat what I make, dont eat anything - since I dont want to start cooking 15 meals a day. But Ive never had all 3 refuse before. Wow crazy night.

My DD doesn't really have a choice when it comes to eating. She has to eat, whether she wants to or not. I don't shove food down her throat or anything, but she's not allowed to get up until she eats. If she just flat out refuses, she doesn't eat anything else. If she's hungry enough, she'll eat what I make her.

I make them sit at the table w/ the rest of the family until we're all finished, if they choose to not eat then fine, but they don't get anythign until the next meal, if its dinner then they'll get a small snack in a few hours, just like your after noon or late morning snacks...then hopefully they'll remember how hungry they were last night and eat today...most of the time though, they'll end up at least picking at what i've cooked if they have to sit there the whole time.

We have two rules - taste the food and enjoy the conversation. Dinner is about connecting and nourishing emotionally here as it is about nourishing physically. If you don't want to eat, that's your choice. The food will be in the fridge for the rest of the evening if you decide otherwise. But staying at the table is a must. I don't know if I would fully enforce that rule with a 2yo, but it would be tried every night until he could sit through it. (around age 3-4)

We also make DD just sit at the table. I'd never force her to eat anything she didn't want to eat, but she still needs to be a member of the family. If she can sit there with a plate of food in front of her and not eat, then she's just not hungry and I can respect that. But definitely don't make anything else! Like PP said, make them a small snack a couple of hours later, but nothing as substantial as dinner.

How about have a standard alternative. Either eat what I cook... or have a bowl of Cheerios.

That's good, too. Then they know that there is no leeway (no asking for something that you'd have to cook, or something "easy" like cookies) and you don't have try to decide what to feed them. Also, it's not all that exciting, so they won't opt for that unless they truly don't like what you made. This way it doesn't become a power play - and making food into a power struggle is just asking for all sorts of other issues, you know?

Re: What to do when they wont eat what u make

I'm with the ones where if they don't want to eat they get nothing until the next meal. Sometimes they've gone without eating until Breakfast, but none have starved from it. They're 6, 7 & 9 now & rarely do they do this now becuase they know they won't get anything else.

Now if all 3 of them did it & it was something they'd normally eat I'd suspect 1 of 2 things

1. they're too engrossed in whatever they were doing & would have rather done that then eat

2. they're coming down with something.
