Tempeh?

I got some flax tempeh to try. I heard it was more meaty in texture than tofu and my DH HATES the texture of tofu (I'm not a huge fan either). How do you cook with it? I wanted to make a sweet and sour chicken recipe I have that you coat the chicken in flour and then dump it with soy sauce and vinegar and stuff and cook it in a pot in the oven for like an hour. Would that work or would it just fall apart? Would it soak up the taste any? What does Tempeh taste like regular? Thanks for all your help mamas!

Re: Tempeh?

That should work fine. It might crumble a little bit, but shouldn't fall completely apart.
It should also absorb some of the flavors.
Good luck, I love tempeh!

Re: Tempeh?

i usually use it in a stir fry too. i have a recipe for a tempeh salad sandwich filling from moosewood restaurant low-fat favorites cookbook that i remember to be very tasty:

serves 4
salad:
8-ounce package of tempeh
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup diced bell peppers
1/4 cup minced red onions
2 T chopped fresh parsely
1 T soy sauce

dressing:
1/4 cup plain nonfat yogurt
2 T reduced fat mayo
1 T dijon mustard
ground pepper to taste

cut tempeh into 1/2 inch cubes. place them in a steamer over boiling water and steam for 20 minutes.

in a medium bowl, mix together the celery, peppers, onions and parsely. when the tempeh is soft and cooked sprinkle the soy sauce over it and add it to the vegetables. in a small bowl whisk the dressing ingredients together and stir into the salad. serve at once or chill for later.
