Can your cervix dilate then close up again?

is it possible for your cervix to dilate then close again?? i try googling the answer and really get mixed results, but nothing to ease my mind.

recently went and saw my OB who found i was 1cm dilated, ive been put onbed rest since then. i am just really confused how/why/what is going on. i FEEL fine now, and go back and forth from thinking it's ok to get up and clean/go out to worrying that it may not be a good idea...

i keep thinking well, maybe it was just a fluke that they found i was dilated?! and maybe my cervix is closed and fine and everything is as it should be. ahhh i don't know

yes it can. this happens to a lot of women when transferring to the hospital. perfectly normal

Labor stalling due to more primative comfort level reasons is different than potential PTL, though.. she's only 24 weeks.

To the pp, it is quite unlikely, but possible.

thanks for the reply, and yes i am only 24 weeks thats why i am so confused. I am trying to get a better understanding of what all is happening to me right now. with the potential threat of going into preterm labor, its really hard to wrap my mind around it.

my doctors goal is to make sure i dont dilate any further than i am...but then i think is it at all possible to dilate but then close up again. :shrug: just trying to ease my mind a little bit or convince myself that i NEED to rest and take it easy from here on out...

Yes, it can close back up again, but at 24 weeks it's better to stick to bed. *hugs*

yep, mine was 4.5cm at 29wks when I was in preterm labor with my twins but at 34.3wks I was less than 1cm and my OB thought I'd go another 2+wks! I only went another day, not even 48hrs! LOL I was on 10wks of bedrest and meds so I know it's not fun, but it bought my babies a lot less time in the NICU. They came home at 7 days and were really only in there for observation and term baby issues, nothing "preemie" related!

thanks all, that clears up some thoughts i have on my mind. Now to just wait until my next check and see how things are progressing. It's so hard to sit around wondering all the time!!!

Yes, when I had ptl that same thing happened. I still went to 42 weeks. I was so depressed lol.

that gives me some more hope that baby just may still stick around in there until new years, or atleast christmas! i am in no way prepared for her to pop out in the next month or two!

update: had an OB visit today, my cervix is still dilated, no clues as to why still.
