Mine was covered 100% with my old insurance when I had ds. I left the hospital with a brand spankin' new Medela Pump In Style. They just have the OB write am order for it. My old insurance rocked - not sure if the insurance I have through dh now would cover it but as I still have the PIS it's not an issue.

I tried looking into this before Duckie was born but my ins (Aetna) said that their rules were that it had to be either for multiples or a preemie AND that I'd need a prescription from the doctor. But I'd still have to cover the first $250 off the pump....Wic gave me a free pump for a year so you can guess which one I went with.

I had a hospital grade one through Kaiser and I believe they offered Amedas through WIC last I checked. I already had my own Medela with my last 2 so it wasn't necessary but I have a lot of friends who get their's through their insurance company! It's usually really cheap too!

We have BCBS, too. When Logan was born in 2005 they wouldn't cover any cost of the pump

My job (I'm a nurse and work in a hospital.) gave me a huge employee discount on a brand new medela pump and then insurance covered the rest of the cost so I got one for free. The hospital calls it and "gift" to you from them for all nursing employees. It was really great!

Here you go, mama!

Quote:
TRICARE may cover electric hospital-grade breast pumps for premature infants who meet certain criteria. The breast pump may be covered for use in the hospital, and in certain cases, if the physician can prove medical necessity, for home use.

TRICARE does not cover:

* Electric hospital-grade breast pumps for convenience
* Basic electric breast pumps
* Manual breast pumps
