Respite Care

I was just wondering if there is anyone else here that does Respite care. I usally do it for special needs children. I'll occasionally do it for families with multiple children, since it's really hard to find a home around here that are willing to take all the kids at once. I usally do respite care 2-3 days but for one family I regularly work with, I have taken for almost 3 weeks.

With the new baby comming it's getting really hard to deal with all the behaviors and such. I'm going to take a break for a little while with the SN and the large families. I feel really guilty about doing this though. Some of the families just don't have anyone else they trust that can care for these children.

Re: Respite Care

We're still waiting on the state to process our file and get our license, but we are open to respite cases. Pretty much we said we'd take about any case they threw our way.
Respite has to be pretty hard. It's a confusing time for a kid.

I wouldn't feel guilty for taking a break, you need to make sure your family comes first, everyone should understand that.

Take the break! You need it and these families will find someone else!

We did respite for our current placement 5 weekends before he was placed with us.

Re: Respite Care

Respite is temporary care for foster kids, like when the foster family has to travel or is for some reason unavailable. Respite care can also be used for kids with dificult behaviors when the foster family needs a break.
