EW!!! Bugs in diaper pail!

I don't know where they keep coming from but I keep finding this little brown flying insects in her diaper pail, they're almost like gnats but a little bit bigger. I do a load every 2-3 days but I think I'll have to do the wash more frequently until I figure out where they're coming from.
It's SO disgusting but I think they love the poopy dipes the most. Ick!

Are there any essential oils or anything that I can put in the diaper pail to keep this from happening?
I live in Florida so bugs are a constant problem for us no matter how clean I keep my house. We even have monthly pest control! Ugh!

do you leave the top open? Maybe try a hanging pail with a zipper?

We are in SC and I have problems with those little suckers too. They are ALWAYS in there and TONS of them. I had to start putting a pc of fleece with about 5 drops of TTO on it in the bottom of the pail and it seems to be working.

I also have to spray the pail out every few days since I dont use a liner.

Re: EW!!! Bugs in diaper pail!

EEW. They're in there because they're looking for somewhere to lay eggs. I'd get a pail with a lid to keep them out, I'm afraid there isn't much to deter them. We get flies in spring and late summer here and the only remedy is to keep the pail closed tight. Wait longer than two days to wash and you may get other nasty surprises.

ETA: Do you have any houseplants? They could be coming from those.

We have these things that plug into the wall that make some sort of high pitched vibration/noise (sorry I'm not more specific and I don't know what they are called) but they are supposed to keep insects away because they don't like the noise. We used to have a ton of crickets and grasshoppers (in the basement and garage) but you could try to find one of these things to plug into the wall near your diaper pail. It might work and would be worth a try imho to get rid of the bugs. good luck mama

My husband owns a pest control company and says those do not work. Please dont waste your money.

I think in the summertime, flies and bugs are just a way of life, especially in Fl! On really hot days, and when ther is a real stinky diaper, I will see flies flying out of the pail when I open it. Its closed, so I guess they fly in when it gets opened, or else its not closed tightly and they get in the cracks. Tea tree oil sounds like an easy, cheap thing to try. And its also good to wash your diapers with!
