Frequent night terrors with three year old?

Hi,
Our son is almost three and a half. About a month ago he started crying out in his sleep and thrashing around in his bed. Sometimes it wakes him up sometimes it doesn't. He has also started having accidents again while asleep, has been night trained for months. Any thoughts? Could it be that his body is trying to wake him up to go potty, so it has him in a half awake mode? Anyone have this happen?

TIA

Re: Frequent night terrors with three year old?

My son has night terrors due to milk. He was sensitive to milk before that, but didn't have night terrors until he was about 3 1/2 or so. Night terrors are often tied to food.

However, night terrors often have no known cause. It is possible it is his body trying to wake him. If that is the case, if you stay up a few hours after he does, try taking him to the bathroom when you go to bed.

Have you had his thyroid levels checked? Sometimes, hyperthyroidism can cause panic attacks and night terrors. I'm hyperthyroid and it causes me nightmares and night sweats frequently. It's not uncommon in children, so that could be the cause with him.

Re: Frequent night terrors with three year old?

Joey did this a bunch for awhile and then just had one more last week. I was talking to friends of ours and they said their now 6yo used to have them. They were told to half wake him up a couple hours after he went to sleep. That's what I do now. Before I go to bed I go in and kiss him and talk to him softly a little bit. It seems to have worked wonderfully. It has something to do with deep sleep/REM.
