Should you start with single-grain rice cereal prior to feeding veggies and fruits?

Blender Baby Food mentions to do this to introduce needed iron. So, you feed them single grain cereal first, then fruits and veggies. Is this necessary?

I don't think so. Rice is so constipating. The first food my DS ate was avocado. Then we went with oatmeal that I ground up in the blender. Are you EBF or using formula? The iron they put in those cereals is not very well absorbed too. It really caused poop issues for us.

If you are doing formula or multivitamins they should get iron from those. So not necessarily. I did, but only because my kids liked a more mashed potatoes consistency to their foods.

We tried rice cereal to see how our almost 6mth old would do.......so bad!
He is very fussy and can't poop. I don't think it has any nutritional value besides iron and as pp said you can get that from other foods, formula or take a vitamin if you EBF :-)

Babies don't need cereal...honestly that is outdated advice. My DD never got any. We started her with veggies & fruits, and then on to meat & fish (very iron rich). I added grains & beans/lentils gradually after that.

I've read that the iron in cereal is not even that well absorbed.
Besides, have you tasted it? Blech!

It is not necessary as long as they are getting a substantial amount of formula or breastmilk. It is a person preference. I know alot of children who have never had a taste of baby cereal but I also know just as many if not more that have had it. I personally DO introduce it first.

Re: Should you start with single-grain rice cereal prior to feeding veggies and fruit

I wouldn't worry too much about the iron thing. Doctors seem to have latched on to the iron issue but I couldn't find too much research to back it up. Also, babies don't normally develop the digestive enzymes for grains until after a year of age so feeding rice doesn't do a lot of good from a nutritional standpoint. With DS we stuck with veggies, fruits and lots of fat (mixed coconut oil and butter in to all fruits and veggies). The fat is really good for vitamin absorption and brain development.
