it pays to ask about alternative solutions to medical intervention!

brief background: last night was spent in the ER with ds (who is 1). he was "cooking" with grandma and she had him sitting on a barstool with a back- she glanced away to measure something and he fell off the stool and hit his head. goose-egg in a few minutes, but was fine all afternoon. around 6p he started throwing up and acting really strange - super scary. so we took ghim to the ER and of course they wanted to do a CT scan, which we wanted also to make sure there was no bleeding or swelling inside his head. being he's a super active one year old the dr, tech and even we agreed there was no way he could hold his head still for 30-60 seconds while they did the scan. the alternative was to sedate him (um... scary! he's ONE!) so we asked if there was any way we could help stabilize his head and just try it out. they were all skeptical, but willing to let us try. they put these rubber pads on the sides of his head and strapped him down. dh held his hands and body, while i held his chin and hands too. he fussed a bit and we sang "twinkle twinkle little star" to him throughout the scan. guess what?? it worked - he didn't move at all. he was so good, and interested in the machine spinning and moving. so we got through a scary ER visit without needing to sedate him
btw, scan was normal - concussion, poor little guy and grandma is of course absolutely beside herself. but he should be totally fine.
pays to ask and try out the alternatives!!

Wow, that's great! DD had to have a scan earlier this year and the child life specialist actually went in with Abby and held her hand so that we wouldn't have to sedate her. I think sedation is necessary in many cases, but it's nice to see other options taken seriously. It probably took a little extra time coordinating the child life dept with xray, but it was well worth it and much safer.
