transition off bottle ... straight to cup?

DS is 13 months and its probably about time to get him off his bottle. during meals he prefers sipping straight from a cup to any sippy cup, and is getting pretty good at it.

my question is, what do i do to replace the bottles he is getting after naps and before bedtime? sippy cup? straight from a cup (messy if he's going to chug 4-6 oz at once!)? and should i just do it cold turkey, or transition somehow?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. 13 months is still young!

Re: transition off bottle ... straight to cup?

Well, my DD #1 went from bottle to sippy cup (liked the take and toss ones!) at 11 months, DD #2 was about 13-14 months when we went to total sippy cup. They did fine with them at meals and made the switch easily, unlike my friend's 3 yo who still took a bottle to church!

To me the key was finding a cup she liked. The take and toss ones are so nice because they are cheap and stack up easily. They both still go to bed with a sippy cup of water.

NO FLAMES....my 19 month old(born @ 34weeks) is still on the bottle at times, his suck is just getting good enough to drink out of a spill proof sippy cup..so we are now starting to transition slowly, and with prayers and lots of patients he will be off the bottle by 2 at the latest. I have tried every kind of cup before finding one..good luck mama. and I dont think I would go cold turkey, well I would if I could, but again like I said ds suck isnt quite that strong yet.....if you think you can handle it try cold trukey. good luck

wow, okay! folks around here have been telling me to start at 1 year when he made the transition to whole milk, so i thought i was late. has anyone had a kid who skipped the sippy cup and went straight to drinking out of a cup or out of a straw?

Re: transition off bottle ... straight to cup?

Coco will *only* drink her milk from a straw. She's got no love for milk from the sippy cup. And no love for cow's milk at all. We're on enriched vanilla soy out of the little boxes which I put in a juice box holder. And, I did notice that when I took away her bottles, she went back to nursing more (which was fine with me because I wasn't ready to stop!). So, I'd say if you notice him nursing more (if he still is) then that would signal a continued need to suckle which he'll meet however he can! Coco's thumb has a sore on it from how much she sucks it.
