Absorbency on hemp vs. bamboo vs. cotton

I remember reading somewhere the absorbency differences between these with something like a ounce of fluid chart but I can't seem to find it on the boards.

Does any one know which is more absorbent? Hemp or Bamboo vs cotton?

Thanks!

Re: Absorbency on hemp vs. bamboo vs. cotton

You know.. I was wondering the same thing. Maybe different bamboo has different absorbant rates like some hemp? I know that JoeyBunz hemp inserts are not as absorbant as Happy Heiny's Hemp Stuffins.

I recently bought several bamboo prefolds to use as inserts in our pocket diapers and have had leaks BOTH times. I will admit that ds1 is a SUPER soaker. I am still using Happy Heiny's Hemp Stuffins in his pockets.

I hope someone will not only go into detail about what you asked, but maybe also give the BRANDS of Bamboo that work the best. {Are the most absorbant}.

Cotton is first. Hemp is supposed to hold a lot more than the cotton microfiber inserts. I 'thought" bamboo was supposed to hold more than hemp, but from my personal experience with the several different brands/types of bamboo prefolds/flats that I have tried.. I would say that Happy Heiny's Hemp Stuffins are WAY MORE absorbant than bamboo. {though I can only compare to the two/three that we have used. We also bought them 'used' to try so that may have made a difference too}.

HTHs!

Yeah, I don't know either about the brands.

I know that "used" hemp is more absorbent than new. I'm not sure if bamboo needs to be prepped or if it decreases absorbency after uses.

Any one know?

Bamboo does need four or five washes to get up to full absorbancy, and like anything else can get buildup that will cause it to repel. I have not tried hemp, but I do know that my bamboo inserts hold a LOT more than a cotton prefold or a cottonbabies microfiber insert. Mine are from Greenhorn (courtcourt on DS), if that makes any difference. They are FABULOUS.

Re: Absorbency on hemp vs. bamboo vs. cotton

In my experience, bamboo, on the whole, absorbs more than hemp, and it's easier to deal with in terms of washing. That said, of the bamboo fabrics that I have used, the absorbency has been, from most absorbent to least absorbent - fleece, french terry, velour, double terry, terry.

Hemp seems to run about the same. Both bamboo and hemp get more absorbent after they've been washed several times. (Also, keep in mind that when you are talking hemp vs. bamboo, these fabrics are a combination of hemp and cotton or bamboo and cotton.)

Also, fabrics from different suppliers and different mills will yield different absorbencies. For instance, bamboo fleece that is milled to 16oz to the yard is going to be more absorbent (and more costly) than bamboo fleece milled to 12oz to the yard.

Hope that helps!

Hemp over cotton/microfiber inserts for sure. Bamboo is more absorbant than hemp but I am not a big fan of our bamboozal.
We love a hemp pf with hemp insert and wool cover at night.
Hemp flannel is also snappiable

I have always heard that hemp is more absorbent than bamboo. Our experience has been that this is true.

I'm not totally sure but I find our hempbabies inserts to be incredibly absorbant.....they are the little ones too but they seem to absorb a tonne.
