Flat folds

Please critique and comment, and add yours.

Here is my favorite flat fold, if anyone knows what the name of it is or can tell me how to do it better I'd appreciate it. I love this fold because it gives us good coverage in the crotch.

(ETA: This first fold is the Neat Fold. Lots of folds here: http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/public...ls.aspx?id=140)

NEAT FOLD

Start with your blanket in a diamond.

Fold up the bottom corner.

Fold down the top corner.

Bring in one side, with the top corner touching the top edge of the blanket.

Bring in the other side, also with the top corner touching the top edge.

Presto, there you have it!

Also here is the origami fold as I understand it. Lots of moms love this and it's easy to find on the Internet, but I'm putting it here anyway in case there is a way I could do it better. I don't like it because it's too narrow in the crotch for my son. (But I wonder if I could fold the soaker part in twice instead of three times and use a doubler.)

Start with your blanket folded in fourths.

Grab the corner of the first layer and pull it over to make a triangle shape.

Now, grab the top edge and FLIP IT OVER so that the long part of the triangle is at the top and face down. (This is the confusing part.)

The square part that is now on the top should be folded in three times to make the soaker.

That's it! Just fold it up around the baby.

If anyone has the link to the thread with the video on how to do this fold please post it. Also any better directions/photos would be appreciated.

Receiving blankets/flats have so many uses and are so versatile.

I think the top fold is called the Jo fold... not sure, but I like it, too!

Re: Flat folds

The top one is my favorite too. When I do the origami I only fold over twice and fold in a doubler with it. Way better coverage, but I still don't like how long the wings are. My niece sewed a bunch of hers into the origami fold so she didn't have to fold them anymore. She said they still wash nice, just take longer to dry.

I have a really great word document with tons of folds in it, but I don't think I know how to post a document. Let me try....hmmmm.....it says it's way too big. Anyone know how to fix that?

Can you copy and paste the text into a post? Are there too many words? Maybe just omit what is not totally necessary. I'd love to see it.

Actually, the top fold is the "neat nappy". The Jo fold is similar, but you end up with a rectangle rather than a trapezoid. The neat nappy is my absolute favorite with a doubler.

Re: Flat folds

Anyone know how to do the kite fold? My mom showed me a couple of weeks ago and I forgot already. It seemed to be similar to the top one, but not exactly like it. I don't see the kite shape in that pic!! I found it. Let's see if I can paste it in here. Nope. Hmmm...
http://www.natureschild.com.au/flex/nappies/19/1

It's on that page. So easy and simple. My mom said it was her favorite.

ETA:I put a flat in the kite fold on my ds yesterday and the fit was so great I had to call my mom and tell her!! The legs were snug, the waist was snug, no way anything could have escaped that one. She said she learned that one when she worked at a children's hospital back in the 60s. She worked in the baby/toddler wing and that is the fold they used to keep it all in.

Re: Flat folds

I fold the flat down to a rectangle or square of the PF size I am currently using, then do they PF angel wing fold:

For a NB size, I'd fold it narrower in the first pic and fold it in thirds in the second pic.

I used to do origami when DS's poops were predictable for pee-only times. But he's not predictable anymore, so I just do this all the time when I use flats. I stack them with my PFs, since they are folded to the same size.

Re: Flat folds

Nice tutorials! I always just fold my flats to be in teh shape of a prefold (overlapping in the middle so there's more absorbancy there) and then fold away!
