He has taken iron drops in the past when his iron was low. But just recently we started him on those breakfast drink mix thingies so he'll gain weight.

Grace was BFed for 15 months and had an awesome diet at that age.... At our 18 month appt, the pedi recommended starting to give her half a Flinstones each day, just as a supplement (he knows that she is getting a terrific diet though)....

I didn't sweat it and we just started yesterday.

Carnation Instant Breakfast ROCKS!! My DS has always been on the tiny side, its more his body type than nutrition b/c all my other boys have been baby chubby or solid until school age. He was 8lbs at birth but only 17lbs at 1yr and at almost 3yrs he's just not 27-28lbs. My 13mo DS is almost 25lbs so it won't be long until he surpasses him. Anyway, my dr wasn't worried necessarily, but just wanted to be on the safe side since he is a picky eater for the most part so we started the CIB and he gained over 2lbs in 6mos and his iron levels are perfect.

ITA with the PP who said she increases the high source foods to avoid suppliments which is exactly what I want to do. I have started giving him PB 3-4x/wk, Cream of Wheat w/ fruit, eggs, etc. to get his iron up instead of relying only on the vitamins. I have only been giving the PolyViSol maybe 3-4x/wk also and mixed into VitC rich juice to help w/ absorption.

We do PolyViSol with iron. I don't think she was ever deficient, but my diet hasn't been the greatest. (DD was never tested for anemia or anything.)

She doesn't mind the drops...I give 'em to her in the tub and we brush her teeth right after so no staining.

Re: Do you give dc multivitamin or iron supplement drops??

even though there isn't a lot of iron in breastmilk it is all absorbable and usable unlike vitamin supplements or the kind they fortify everything with. Also on the con side from what I've heard when you start giving fortified with iron stuff it can make it hard for the baby to absorb the natural iron in other things. I was on iron supplementation after losing a liter of blood. After 3 months I started feeling gross I started looking into it and found out it could be caused by too much iron, so I stopped the supplements and it went away. My kids do not giet iron supplements and actually I prefer to only give whole food supplements for DH, DC, or me.

Re: Do you give dc multivitamin or iron supplement drops??

I've heard the bf babies sometimes need iron drops. DS gets formula, so it already has iron. I do give him a multivitamin, but only a bout every other day. I used to give him one every day (it's for infants) but I don't really feel he needs it EVERY day. I give him Vit C drops when he's sick too.

We don't vaccinate, we kept our sons intact, we use cloth diapers, we co-sleep, we extended RF, we breastfeed, but we watch too much tv and I totally dig plastic! Everyone has their issues, lol.
