I have been suffering from SEVERE asthma since October 5th. It started with a cold/flu thing and then morphed into extreme cough spasms, tons of phlegm, wheezing, and chest tightness. I've been coughing so violently that I pee my pants at least 1x/day and I've pulled muscles in my rib cage and, just last night, the side of my neck.

It has gotten progressively worse since it started almost 3 months ago. Finally, I had to go in for an urgent doctor's visit this morning. I am now on 20 mg of Prednisone to help control the inflammation but I'm still having terrible cough spasms with lots of phlegm.

The doctor has been talking about allergies causing asthma and it just baffles me as to why this would crop up NOW. Then it occurred to me tonight... the only thing I was doing differently around the time this started is I changed our laundry detergent to homemade. It took me about 30 minutes to find the post I made on the night I made a batch for the first time. It was September 29th.

COINCIDENCE? I hope so! Anyone else?

I don't understand it.
I LOVE this thread! I've been reading it since yesterday afternoon. I've been neglecting all my other household duties...
Anyway, be VERY careful ladies, when you mix your detergent. Use gloves (NOT your hands!) and perhaps a mask if you have asthma issues. The Borax has some very harmful components. Also, anytime you mix chemicals like this, there are bound to be reactions. So please be careful!

I, myself, just use washing soda and simple green (about 1/4 cup WS, and 10 squirts of concentrated SG) in my diaper laundry! It works wonders! I use Planet for them normally (diapers, that is), but I always come back to my WS/SG as that is what keeps the stink away! Also, I have to wash in HOT water. So, for those of you who don't want to use Borax, maybe try this combo!

Re: Green & Thrifty...Making Your Own Detergent! (recipes pg 1 & 16)

I made my own detergent and so far, it's worked great!!! I actually just used Irish Spring soap b/c that's what I happen to have in my stockpile. LOL I used a cheese grater, then put everything in a baggie and mushed it all up, to make the soap finer. I wish I would've had a rolling pin! LOL

I didn't read thru the whole thread, but I was wondering what the diaper detergent costs per load. Just a ball park would be great.

Thanks

How do you add EO to the Powder detergent? I want a different smell to!

The cost per load is in one of the first posts... I don't remember exactly, but it's cheap!

EOs - again, I think it was posted back in the beginning of the thread, but I think you just add and mix with a fork to break up any chunks.

Don't know about Baby Oxyclean, but again, I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread.

What is the cost of the ingredients per month, or however often you have to rebuy them? Just seem more convenient and economical to buy detergent pre-made.

Thanks for sharing!

- non-sudsing, so it's safe for FL and HE machines!
- washing soda is available at Kroger, Hannafords, Acme, and Publix
- washing soda is "sodium carbonate" and might be with pool supplies
- you can order washing soda at www.drugstore.com
- Kirks is available at Kroger, Frys, and Cracker Barrel
- you can use Dr Bronners soap instead of Kirks
- Fels Naptha is yucky stuff, and Ivory doesn't work well for laundry
- NO soap on diapers (that's the laundry recipe)
- use oxyclean FREE and it's safer for your diapers
- mix this after the kids are in bed, in case you spill!
- don't subsitute baking soda!
- washing soda & borax ARE safe for your diapers used in this small amount!
- you can also use a cheese grater for the soap
- you can add essential oils to the powder and stir with a fork
- vinegar in the rinse can cause stinkies in microfiber
- this has been used with hemp without problems
- lots of bubbles is from your old detergent build up!
- always use a cold rinse first, so you don't set in stains
- with liquid Dr Bronners instead of soap there is a chance of staining from the oils
- you can use the diaper detergent for your clothes too
- sun oxygen cleaner is a cheaper alternative to oxyclean
- call 1-800-781-7529 to get Oxyclean Free for $6.99 (ask about free ship!)
- strip your dishwasher with homemade detergent before washing dishes!
I only see a cost for oxyclean....
