Re: Cleaning cast iron

It depends on what I cook. Sometimes I only wipe it out with a towel and don't wash it at all. But, if it needs a real cleaning, I scrub mine with salt as well, and after every wash, dry it over low heat on the stove and then rub about a TB of vegetable oil all over the inside with a towel. If the seasoning ever gets scrubbed off, I cook some bacon in it and it brings it right back.

i agree with the previous mamas ...no soap, and always dry throughly on low flame to avoid corosion from water. if u need to reseason, i'd use veg oil.

Re: Cleaning cast iron

I've talked to a restaraunt owner about this. He said that if they didn't wash something with soap they would be shut down. I follow the directions he gave me. So I actually do clean mine with soap after it has cooled down. I use a scrub brush and plain water, when it looks like everything is off I run cool water in it and lightly wash it off with a dab of soap. Rinse well, dry, and then reseason. Never soak -- this could lead to rust. But, if you do get rust on it take some steel wool and rub off.
