Re: How does one know if you have PPD?
I don't know when your dd was born, so it's hard to say if it's just the usual baby blues or something more. The fact that you suspect you do speaks volumes though. Take care of yourself, and speak to someone ASAP, mama.

Re: How does one know if you have PPD?
Thanks mamas for all the advice. I think I will schedule an appointment with my OB and talk to her about it. I'm 8 weeks post partum, so I'm not sure if it would still be considered the baby blues or something else.

Re: How does one know if you have PPD?
I would suggest getting your blood tested, specifically looking at how you are absorbing your vitamins and minerals, and your thyroid levels.
If your thyroid levels are off, I would suggest having them actually to LOOK at your thyroid via ultrasound and see if it is functioning properly. I was that way with Jonathan and found my thyroid was acting all wonky. It is smaller than it should be and was in overdrive. ![]() I do not absorb vitamins as I should, so I have to suppliment severely from time to time. . . but that is due to my celiac disease and factors like stress... not enough sleep and the like.

Re: How does one know if you have PPD?
I would also say to speak to your doctor, but I would personally try non-drug interventions first. Is someone available that can watch your kids for an hour or two while you get a massage, haircut, nails done, warm bath, etc. Are you able to take a walk outside with your kids? Can your husband give you a nice back rub and tell you what a good mother you are and how much he loves you? I would say try to take time every day for you. I cried on and off for the first 6 weeks after ds was born. I was devastated at the amount of change that happened in such a short amount of time.
If you and your doc decide to use medications, you should know that anti-depressants can take up to 6 weeks before they start working. I would advise against Effexor--I have heard horror stories of people that have a difficult time discontinuing that medication. You could also try omega-3s, and getting your thyroid checked is definitely a good idea. You are doing an amazing job!!!!!

Re: How does one know if you have PPD?
The first sign of depression for me is fighting with DH, and he usually picks up on it before me.
