ebf & diarrhea?

My 8 week old ebf son has diarrhea I think. It started last night. His poop is pure liquid (no "seeds" but still mustard colored) & giving his bum a rash. It also smells really bad, not sweet or subtle like bf poop is supposed to smell.

What could be causing it? I alreay cut out dairy (milk protein) from my diet a week ago.

Ugh, nevermind. I had milk.

I love those terra vegetable chips so I send DH to get me some. He got the mediterranean flavor and I didn't think anything of it. I just looked at the ingredients and, sure enough, contains milk.

My poor little guy's stomach is rumbling around like crazy and he's pretty miserable.

Re: ebf & diarrhea?

Has your ds had milk sensitivity in the past? If this is something that just allthe sudden started, I'd say he has a virus. Ds had norwalk a couple weeks ago... although norwalk produces green diarrhea. Rotavirus is a raunchy yellow diarrhea though...

Keep an eye on hydration and I'm sure he'll be fine. Diarrhea is soooo not fun, so I feel for you. Use prefolds and slather his bum up with cream.

I was going to mention milk...Sounds like you've found the problem. If it is truly the milk, then his diarrhea should be gone in a few hours. If it isn't gone, then he probably does have some sort of tummy virus. If his diarrhea continues, I would check in w/ the ped, to make sure he doesn't end up dehydrated. Good luck!

Re: ebf & diarrhea?

Thanks, ladies.

He's fine today. Not even fussy, which is amazing for him since he has reflux.

He has been on Zantac for reflux but it didn't seem to be helping much so I decided to eliminate dairy from my diet to see if that would help. I noticed a difference within three days, but we still have some off days. I'm not 100% convinced it's the dairy and not coincidence, but I'll do anything to help. We see a new pedi next week. I hope she has some insight.
