DS gags on whole milk
My DS is just over a year and I'm feeling like I'm ready to wean him. He still nurses 5x's in 24 hours and will only drink water from a sippy cup (will only take about 2 oz EBM from a bottle). I've been trying whole milk, but he gags and won't drink it. My pedi suggested 2% milk with some honey in it. Has anyone done this? Any other suggestions? I'm afraid to wean him until I know he'll be OK nutritionally.

Re: DS gags on whole milk
I always thought honey was a no no...?
Maybe he has a dairy sensitivity? Have you tried soy milk, goat or rice milk? Also, maybe try pumping and mix half and half? and gradually decrease the amount of breastmilk you put into it. good luck

Re: DS gags on whole milk
Thanks for the ideas!
His pedi said honey was OK, I think as long as they are over 1 year old. I will have to try the Goat and Rice milk too. T |

Re: DS gags on whole milk
We did the half and half trick and never had any troubles. Good luck.

Re: DS gags on whole milk
Yeah, I always give a sippy with mostly bm, and a little cow's milk added in and gradually increase the amount of cow's milk over a period of weeks and then they are finally taking the cow's milk straight. I only introduced cow's milk for daycare (5 hours/day), and continued to nurse when we were together.

Re: DS gags on whole milk
i would be *EXTREMELY* skeptical about the honey and 2% milk advice. the reason for whole milk is babies need that fat for brain and nerve development. i fail to see how 2% milk with honey is a substitute for that. honey is still a botulism risk at that age (nothing magical happens at the 1yo mark) its just thought that their gut is better able to fight the bacteria as they get older but that doesn't mean there is no risk. at the very least adding it to the milk is going to be bad for the baby's teeth. i would seriously want to get a second opinion before i went with that advice.
in the meantime if you pump can you try phasing in the whole milk more gradually by mixing with your pumped BM?
