Question Croup?

Just found out a few minutes ago that my 2 1/2 year old niece has croup. On Sunday, we hung out at the in-laws' house, and her and my 19 mo. old DS were playing together. Not like sharing sippy cups or holding hands or anything, in fact the only time they were super close they were sitting next to each other in the porch swing, my niece wasn't coughing on him or anything like that. Is croup contagious? My SIL says it's "highly contagious", but she's kind of paranoid about the germs and such (big on hand sanitizing, etc.), and I wouldn't put it past her to unjustifiably freak out. So do any of you mamas know? Is this something I should be worried about?

Re: Croup?

I don't know about highly contagious but yes it is contagious. In toddlers it is croup but in older kids and adults it is often little more than a cold. DD#2 had croup the first (and hopefully only) time a couple of months ago. Our pedi said dd#1 would likely get it but it would only be a cold to her - and yes she did get a cold like he said.

My ds gets croup several times a year. It is pretty much what every cold turns into with him. It is contagious usually day 2 and 3 are the worst. We have a neb and steroids for the neb on hand because he has been in the ER taking breathing treatments so many times they just started prescribing it at home. I would give your lo Vit C to help boost the immune system and maybe you will get lucky and not get the nasty virus.

Meh, it's suppose to be contagious, but I've really only noticed it coming from a previous illness. My son has it constantly, for him it's asthma/allergy related. None of his friends have ever gotten it from him and we're with kids literally every single day.

We don't vaccinate, we kept our sons intact, we use cloth diapers, we co-sleep, we extended RF, we breastfeed, but we watch too much tv and I totally dig plastic! Everyone has their issues, lol.
