Unhappy HELP! Seriously stank nappies!

My 1yo ds woke me up at 5 in the morning because he was soaked through his two hemp doublers and pf so when I took the cover off to change him I was met with this horribly stank smell that actually burned (or stung) in my nose (and I know it's something I've smelled before but can't remember where). Is it the hemp or the pf (both smelled fine before I put them on ds) or the cover getting seriously wet? This is the second night it's happened and it only seems to happen at night. Day time wettings are fine. Is it just that the dipe has been on him too long? Is it a washing thing? I need it fixed and stat! We just started CDs and I'm really wanting to fall off the wagon because of this one

Thanks mamas!

I would suspect both the doublers and the prefolds need to be stripped. I had a similar problem, and that cured it.

Did it smell like ammonia? They probably need to be stripped.

Re: HELP! Seriously stank nappies!

We had the night time stink for a while, the way I got rid of it finally (after trying stripping and dawn and extra rinses etc etc) was to wash first in cold, with tiny amt of detergent and 1/8th cup bleach, follwed by a hot wash/cold rinse with nothing added. I now do it once a week, toddler pee is strong.
The first time I tried it, I had way too many bubbles on the hot wash and had to do a few extra rinses. But now I just do the two washes, cold/soap/bleach then hot/with nothing, and no bubbles and no stink (not even bleach smell)

Seconding...strip them and see if that helps. Hemp can get pretty stinky if it's got buildup, especially.

DD has been doing the same thing the past two nights so guess what I'm doing today. Gee if all my fluffy mail shows up, my washer is going to hate me!

Re: HELP! Seriously stank nappies!

i'd use 1/8th cup bleach to help get rid of the smell. let the bleach swish around for a minute before you throw the dipes in. hope you get it figured out.
