I need Pioneer Food

My dd's grade 3 class is doing a unit of Pioneers. Tomorrow they're supposed to dress up like Pioneers and they will briefly experience the life of Pioneers. She has asked that they each bring a snack that a pioneer child would have brought.

My girls already take cloth lunch bags so that part is handled and for wrapping things I have brown paper.

I want something unique other than sending an apple/simple sandwiches, anyone can do that.

Now we are having roast chicken for supper tonight and i was planning on making buns/bread but I want something more.

I would think something like an apple fritter would be something they might have. Like a fruit pocket pie. otherwise I am stumped. I hope it is fun for them.

If I lived near mom and she had beef jerky from their cows I'd do that, she lives 6hours away and is in China right now.lol

I ended up making doughnuts from a heritage recipe. Should have had more sugar in them but that'll keep me from eating them too.lol

Re: I need Pioneer Food

snack wise i'm stumped but lunch box or bag, carrier wise a cloth bag (unless it was a used flour sac and even then) would be to nice or expensive to just carry a lunch, most used metal pails or wooden pails that no longer served their purpose for hauling water. fabric, and cloth were luxury items in pioneer days. thats why many family used hand me downs untill they fell off their bodies and then they patched them up and used them longer.

back on topic jams and jellies were a sweet snack and any preserved veggies would also work canning was a big thing back then, smoked meat. i used to wor kat cannington manor (down by the maintoba/US border) but i was in charge of the soap making and laundry pioneer aspects. stew is what we made when schools and groups came for the day but thats not really snackish
