What Do You Do To Comfort Yourself?

I had a really hard morning with the boys. DS#1 started crying and that made DS#2 start crying. DS#1 didn't want to get dressed for preschool. DS#2 was trying to cling to my legs while I am trying to get dressed. Then he drenched himself playing in the potty. All the while, DS#1 is screaming. I started yelling and I feel so low right now. So I've been munching on junk food, so now I feel bad for trashing my body. What do you do that brings you comfort? I turn to food, but it is a horrible habit and I still feel like crap. Any suggestions? I would love to take a long hot bath right now, but DS#2 will be waking up soon. I need a pick me up.

Hot tea, and a few food deep breaths while hiding in the bathroom.

Re: What Do You Do To Comfort Yourself?

When it's the kids that are driving me crazy, I get out old photo albums/scrapbooks of them (home movies are even better!). Those are usually so cute and/or funny that it helps, even if it is a little bit. The kids always like to look at them with me as well and then I can tell them the stories that go with the pictures.

Or go out to the park/play area if you can. They can run off some energy and you can sit and veg.

Sorry you're having a rough morning, hope things look up for you

Re: What Do You Do To Comfort Yourself?

*Hot baths
*Yoga
*Just sitting in the bathroom (or other room with a lock on the door) with candles lit
*Journalling
*Strapping DD into the carseat and going for a looooong ride (ice cream at the drive-thru optional )
*Gotta love the soft play area at the mall...I see a lot of moms just sitting there kind of shell-shocked while the little ones run and screech

HTH!

Re: What Do You Do To Comfort Yourself?

Don't laugh. I do the laundry. I pile it on my bed and go to town folding. I am standing and moving so theres no one arguing over who gets to sit on my lap, ans we are upstairs so theres no one asking for drinks/snacks, etc. The kids usually find something to do in their own rooms, and thats stops any bickering/crying/whineyness. If they can't turn it off, they go to bed. Period.

If the kids are leaving me alone (aka not clamoring for attention,) I make a nice hot cup of coffee and sit down in the grown up living room to knit. They say knitting is darn close to meditating, and can lower your pulse rate and blood pressure, as well as increase your immunities.

If they ARE clamoring, and its sunny, we go outside. I'm a firm believer that sunlight will cure any type of the blues. I spread a quilt on our grass and the kids will play on the swingset for HOURS. (I take my knitting ) By the time we come in, everyone is happy, warm from the sun, and ready for a nap.

Momma, we ALL have those days!

Re: What Do You Do To Comfort Yourself?

I have no good advice--I turn to scarfing chocolate, or anything else bad for me, in spades. ugh.

A coping tactic I've tried (with limited success) that a friend recommended to me (who has had great success!) is to growl at whichever kid is making you nuts, and then they growl back, and it just turns silly.

GL!
