Wow! Nathan's almost 2 and I always get "wow, good for you!" when I tell them we're still nursing.

Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing past one year

well, i did it! i called and got a new pediatrician. it is with a doctor who is very popular, so popular that it can be hard to get an appt, but it's worth it. his wife nursed all six of their babies, and i've heard that he's very supportive of breastfeeding. i also told the nurse who took my call why i was switching.

i'm going to mail some info to her office, so she'll certainly know why we're no longer seeing her.

i NEVER rock the boat, but i just couldn't let this slide.

i cannot imagine the trauma my son would go through if i tried to wean him now. he LOOOOOOOVES nursing. i know him well enough to know that he is absolutely not ready to give up nursing yet.

Fither, that is a load of crap! Where did that Ped come from!

My girls all nursed 'til age 2 1/2...youngest now is 18m and nurses for about 75% of her nutrition. There is soooooooooooo much benefit from extended breastfeeding. Even the AAP says that nursing 'til they get their molars is best...which is about age 2.

Good job switching! All I can do is wonder where these ideas come from. Breast milk IS whole milk - just of your own species' not cow's. I've heard that breastmilk turns into "sugar water" after about a year WTH? All you have to do is pump an ounce, let it sit for a minute and take a look at all the fat that accumulates on top. Where on earth do these weird "facts" even come from???

Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing past one year

nak
I would try to find a new doc. I mean if you don't agree or can't trust her why would you call or want to call in an emergency. I have a 2 1/2 yr old still nursing. Are kids nutritional needs being met by nursing? After a year not totally, but its a liquid and there's some good stuff in there, like great anti-bodies. Plus your kiddo is eating FOOD. FOOD plus BREASTMILK = HEALTHY. How do you think millions of people now populate the earth??
Many docs are on the whole milk kick. There are many other ways to get those nutrients. My kids are allergic to cow milk and we do fine with some rice milk and some soy milk. I was worried abt all soy because that's big allergen too.
Sorry I'm trying not to get on my soapp box too much, this is a subject I feel strongly about!
Any way make sure he's eating well and getting liquids (breast milk and water) and at some point introduce some type of milk. I think you are doing great! BTJMHO

That's awful! And very good that you'll be getting a new one. My 17 month old still primarily breastfeeds for his milk. He has the occasional rice milk or soy milk but that's it. Now, one thing of note is that my DS is quite allergic to cow's milk in any way shape or form (except pre-processed in small quantities through me). The one thing my doc has recommended is vitamins to make sure he's getting enough Vitamins. He has commended me for nursing for so long and recommended I continue nursing as long as possible.

Good for you finding a new Doc!! Keep up the good work with your DC - you really are doing the best thing!!!

My DD weaned at 14 months because my milked dried up at 16 weeks pregnant

It has been such a nightmare trying to get her proper nutrition without my breastmilk - I HATE that I'm not able to nurse her anymore....

Good for you and enjoy the new Doc!
