Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing past one year

That's a huge load of bull. I wonder how many women she's told that to who took it to heart? It makes me sad.

Anyone else read this article? Very interesting.
Fat Content of Breast Milk Increases with Time

They say they aren't sure what the effects on a child's health are from such high energy and fat content. Ya know what? I firmly believe that our bodies are making exactly what our babies need, at every stage. There's a reason there's a higher fat and energy content past one year. It's because our babies need that, I'm guessing for brain development and increased activity. You should feel good and be proud that you are still giving your son EXACTLY what he needs!

Good for you for sticking up for what you know is best for you and your baby. I would defnitely be sending a letter of complaint with evidence that extended breastfeeding is beneficial. If she's done this to you, chances are she's done it to other Mothers too.

I hope the new Dr is supportive of breastfeeding!

i'm going to mail some info to her office, so she'll certainly know why we're no longer seeing her.

i NEVER rock the boat, but i just couldn't let this slide.

i cannot imagine the trauma my son would go through if i tried to wean him now. he LOOOOOOOVES nursing. i know him well enough to know that he is absolutely not ready to give up nursing yet.

nak...
good for you mama for finding a new ped. I think some are just generally uneducated about breastfeeding, it is such a small part of what they study so I think you should forward some info to her when you explain why you are finding a new ped.

Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing past one year

oops sorry, i posted before i was done...
I also had a bad experience with a woman doc who had to return to work full time almost immediately after having her babe and so she was "unable" to nurse. I had to take some antibiotics for a bladder infection and wanted one that was breastfeeding friendly and she told me that i could "pump and dump" or give my baby some formula for a week(?!?!) and when I said that I would wait until she figured out what was safe cause I was going to continue bf'ing, she got upset and told me something to the effect of "if a bottle was okay for my baby, it's fine for yours". Needless to say, we found a different doc!

Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing past one year

those links have some GREAT information in them! i'm definitely printing out a lot of information and sending it to her, along with a (polite) note that i feel strongly about advocating for extended nursing.

thanks mamas

Re: Pediatrician criticized me for nursing past one year

Oh man,....I am soo glad you switched!!

I found an awesome GP- very ap his wife has nursed five kids and he believes in nursing until AT LEAST two or when baby decides he/she is done after two....he was actually telling me at his 18 month appt. that he doesn't need any other kind of milk.....I said well I just want to give him something when he eats a meal....he said DOESN'T NEED IT.

Now I am preggo and losing my milk and my 20 month old is NOT happy and either am I....but what can I do??

i have decided that i will no longer be going to her. i'm going to call tomorrow and see if we can get our next appointment with someone else. there is a wonderful man that we saw one time, his wife nursed all six of their babies. hopefully he will be more supportive.
Good for you, mama! And please...PLEASE let your former ped know WHY you've left him...and maybe leave him some educational material so he thinks twice before telling another mama he'd be concerned if she didn't drink cow's milk. Watch out if he takes on a vegan patient! What a terd!

Why would cow milk be better than your milk! Your milk was made for your baby and cows milk was made its baby. Is you baby a calf!
As for the ped, simle and then go home and do what you feel is best.
