I feel really stupid but I need help and advice ASAP!
DS (16 months) woke up with a nasty cold and cough the other day. We don't usually give meds but he was miserable and was crying when he was coughing so I gave him 1/4 of a tsp of cold meds and ran to the store. Well, while I was gone, DH also took it upon himself to give him another dose, not knowing that I had already given him some. The thing is, DH gave him more than he should have even if I HADN'T already given him some. DH told me he gave him a little more than a 1/2 tsp. I'm freaking out. Do I call poison control? I just know all of the recalls with cold medicines. I'm always the one to dose out meds so I was never too worried. Help mamas! I'm freaking out!

WOW! How much does he weigh? How far apart were the doses? How long has it been?
My 27month old only gets a 1/4tsp at 25lbs as that is the recommended amount for his weight.

Re: I feel really stupid but I need help and advice ASAP!
He's 23 lbs. The dosages couldn't have been more than 30 min apart as that is all I was gone for. It's been an hour and a half since he had the meds.

I called poison control to put my mind at ease. It's definitely too much for him but not a toxic dose and he should be fine. She didn't seem alarmed. I'll keep checking in on him though.

I would also call the ped. just for good measure. I definetely wouldnt let him go to sleep for awhile. Essentially he had 4x the does he should have

Re: I feel really stupid but I need help and advice ASAP!
Cold meds are bad for infants to begin with. Health Canada no longer recommends them We only use Tylenol for infants.
That said, I would call poison control and watch your baby for signs of listlessness, lethargy, seizures etc. When we got pregnant we agreed I would always give the meds and keep track and he would ask to make sure there was no double dose. We saw a Bad/scary episode of CSI that freaked us out. I hope it goes OK, which I am sure it will.

Re: I feel really stupid but I need help and advice ASAP!
Thanks mamas! I called the pedi too and she was in agreement with poison control. I feel like such a dummy. I'm so careful with dosages and rarely ever give any meds for colds.
I've read up on cold meds and know they're not the best which is why I don't ever reach for them and the one time I do, DH decides to do the same! He usually calls me for such things too. Anyway, the good news is, DS should be just fine but I will obsessively be checking on him tonight.
