Should I encourage or discourage this?

DD is 20 months old, has recently learned how to turn the light switches on/off (all the light switches in our apartment are exceptionally low for some reason like... waist high on me.

DD is in a "big girl" bed now, and has recently started getting out after we have put her to bed and closed her door, turning her light switch on, and getting back in bed to "read" a book. She eventually does fall asleep on her own, and I turn off the light (and the CD player, which we play her celtic lullaby cd in).

For as long as I can remember, I loved having "wind down" time, to read or do word puzzles etc in bed... but this seems quite young to me to start this habit.

Re: Should I encourage or discourage this?

That's about the age Margo started asking to take books into bed with her. She does the same thing, reads until she falls asleep. We always leave a light on in her room, so that's not an issue.

If your DD really gets back in bed to read (and isn't just making excuses to mess around and NOT go back to bed), then I think it's wonderful! She loves books!

I agree with pp. If it's one of those things that she does on her own and then goes to sleep, I think it's great! Nice for her to be able to have wind down time on her own and not make excuses about not going to bed. Yay for your lo!!

Re: Should I encourage or discourage this?

Ok... well I just checked on her (been almost 2 hours since she went to bed at just after 7pm (it's 8:50pm now) and she's still awake and "reading". She usually falls asleep by now..

ETA - I just called my mom and DD had a later nap than usual today so maybe that's why she is up so late.

Both my boys do this. As long as they function next day, I don't see an issue. My 18 month old has a Moby Tyke Light that he "reads" by and eventually falls asleep. I think it's cute. Now if he was a big grump the next day, we'd ka-bosh it quickly.

If she is doing this naturally then support her as a pp mentioned. She seems to really enjoy reading and of all the habits she could be picking up this one I wouldn't mind.
