how to wash wool sweaters before making..

i have ruined too many goodwill sweaters by trying to 'felt them'. i dont want a 6" sweater to work with!!!

i have a few really cool sweaters now, and a new sewing machine that is ready to be put to work, and don't want to ruin the fabric! should i wash it on a gentle cold cycle?

im afraid they will shrink to ~useless~ but i need some input!'
thanks,

will a cold, gentle cycle in the machine be OK?

I think you should wash them with a wool wash by hand, don't throw them in the washer... then ring out the excess water and and pad them dry inside a towel, then lay them on an airy place to dry. Those are the washing directions for wool covers, so you should do the same, you can add the lanolin after you make them.

You don't need to felt them for them to work. You can just make your longies and then hand wash them when you are all done. Easy peasy!
Have fun!
