I prefer the look of knitting for longies, but the look of crochet for skirties. I find both, when well lanolized, serve just as well as covers.

Crochet's not quite as stretchy, I've found, but it's definitely more bulletproof. I think it's cheaper because knit looks like more like a fabric, and is in more demand. Plus it doesn't take as long (not as labor intensive) to crochet as it does to knit, so that's part of it.
