Is this normal?

First off, I have a Pump-in-Style. I've had it since DD was a couple months old. But, admittedly, it hasn't gotten the use that it should have. I've never been good at making myself use it. We're wanting to go somewhere this Saturday and DS cannot come, so I've been trying really hard to get more than an ounce out each time I pump.

The weird thing is, once I go through the mind-boggling trouble of getting the horn lined up just right on my boob, I turn the machine on. Once it gets going good, I check every little bit to make sure there's still milk coming out. Almost always one nipple has sucked way sideways. A lot of the time they are both way off center. On might be way over to the side, being squished against the inside of the horn, while the other is smooshed against the bottom of the horn. And when it happens it doesn't suck sufficiently. If I adjust with the hand that isn't free anyway, milk comes out well. I let go and it goes right back to where it was, and the milk barely dribbles (if that).

Is there something wrong with my pump, or something wrong with my boobs?)

The nipple shields may be too big for you nipples if you have smaller breasts. Mine kind of do that but I have used a pump for a long time and my body doesn't seem to mind all that much as it doesn't effect my milk production.

I'm about a 38G. I bought the largest breast shields that they offer outside of the glass ones - the XXL 36mm. The ones that came with the pump were way too small.

I use a Avent Isis Manual pump and so notice that sometimes my nipple is off to the side. Itll still pump milk though, once the milk flow starts to dwindle, Ill readjest it so the nipple's pointing in another direction and milk flow will start up again! I think Im stimulating more ducts this way, more effective drainage. (I also have only been pumping since last week so my knowledge isnt very vast... thats just my take on things!)

That's what I find, too. If I readjust, it fixes. But it goes right back in 5 sucks, or less.

If you can pump single sided and hold the misbehaving breast, that might help. Or you can jury-rig a sports bra that fits tight by making it into a hands free bra. I find that my hands free bra does a good job of keeping the girls in line.

Re: Is this normal?

I've actually thought of doing that w/ a bra that doesn't fit anymore!

I have tried single pumping, but that's a whole different problem. The other tube hookup still sucks & blows Even with the pluggy do thing.
