Here are my younger son a year or so ago.
Here's when he wanted dreads:
His hair eventually hit his waist, sooo pretty and blond and wavy, but he cut his hair when his big brother did. He was broken-hearted because he said people didn't hug him as much now that he had short hair. He's growing it back out, it's at shoulderblade level again. He loves having long hair. He says it's okay if people think he's a girl, because that means they think he's pretty, and being pretty is good. I think he likes the attention.
Here's my older boy:
He keeps shorter hair now because he got tired of it getting caught in trees when he'd climb and play in the woods.
