My Mood:
thin milk after gallbladder surgery?

I'm hoping at least one of the nurses or lactation consultants on here can help...

I breastfed my first two sons at the same weight I am at now, but with a fattier and less healthy diet. We always had great weight gain, mustard EBF poop with seeds, and when I pumped, the milk always separated into about 1oz of white, fatty cream and 3-4oz of "milk".

With this LO, we delivered at 35 weeks. My gallbladder was uncontrollable and I was in liver failure and pancreatitis. I had it removed laprascopically 3 days after delivery and had ERCP the day after that to clear the bile duct. My guy has gained at 1oz per day since , eating every 3 hours during the day and now going 6 hours at night before needing to eat. So he's doing well, thank you Lord.

Here's the rub... He poops green everytime he poops. Sometimes its a mustardy green color, other times its just olive green or bright green rarely. No seeds ever. When I pump, the milk separates into maybe 1/4 oz cream to 4 oz milk. Barely a skim coat of the good cream. . I have OALD and oversupply as I have with all 3 so I blockfeed and prepump as needed. He will poop green even when he totally empties a breast. I am not convinced I have a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance since I am nursing one side and prepumping or blockfeeding so he'll nearly empty one breast at a feeding. But I think he's not getting enough fatty cream.

The only difference with this BFing experience is no gallbladder and a healthier diet. Is it possible that having the GB out changed my body's relationship with fat so significantly that I am producing "thin" breastmilk? Is there anything I can do about it? As I said, he's gaining just fine and satisfied with his food. I don't like the green poop and worry about him getting enough fat. Wish I understand the GB and fat metabolism better. Can anyone help? I'm going to call my internist and lactation tomorrow, but DS mamas know everything!
