Couple more questions. Where do you get your aloe? I don't want to order online. Is there any brand you recommend? What about shampoo? Which one do you use?

I Just got the Aloe Gel that Walmart sells - it's by "fruit of the earth" I believe - lots of mamas recommend a tea tree shampoo of some sort to help with keeping your scalp from getting itchy - just make sure it doesn't leave a residue behind. I was using the Giovanni's triple treat tea tree shampoo and will go back to it full time when my dreads are all in
Some ladies like to use Dr Bonners soap... um you can also use any shampoo that doesn't leave a residue of any kind lol really helpful right I'm sure Lisa will be much more help

Knotty Boy has a tightening gel... but, you can get any 100% aloe vera gel, no green stuff though, the clear stuff . Most stores carry a version of clear aloe.
Shampoos you need residue free, there are a few name brand, Knotty Boy and DreadHeadHQ are formulated for dreads (and you will have to find a salon near you or store that carries them), but to be honest I like Paul Mitchell TTO shampoo (found at most salons $20 for a BIG bottle which lasts for like 6 months for me) and occasionally do a vinegar and bakingsoda wash. (Some people like Bakingsoda all the time, I don't I find that it can strip too much from your hair.) My stylist liked Bumble and Bumble TTO shampoo in hers.
Some people love Dr.Bronners, I found it too harsh on my dreads.

I washed them today and am twisting them around my fingers while on the computer lol. They already seem to be locking a little. I love them and I'm surprised that my grandma likes them too
The last couple of days, I realized that my head draws a lot of attention and until now I haven't realized that our area has no dreadheads Some people seriously stop and look.
I've been looking for the clear aloe but until now I haven't found it anywhere....
Does anyone use Lock and Twist? Does it help the hair lock? How often do you use it? Sorry I know I have a ton of Q's.

To be blunt, when it comes to dread products, if there are not white people on the bottle, and it doesn't specifically say for Caucasian hair, don't use it The methods are totally different, twisting won't work for 95% of white people.
I found my aloe at CVS I think? I have seen it at WalFart too. You might just have to look, it usually is in a tub and not a squirt container... The one I have is... (went to grab it) CVS brand Aloe Gel. 100%pure aloe vera gel, no alcohol or color added. Clear bottle with mostly blue printing, and I would assume Fruit of the Earth has a version b/c it says to compare the 2.

Hi mamas! I haven't had the time to read the trillions of posts in this thread, but I just wanted to pop in and say I might be joining you all very soon.
I've been tossing around the idea for a few months, but never mentioned it to DH because I was sure he wouldn't be into it. I brought it up tonight, and I thought for sure I'd get a "no wife of mine..." but he actually didn't seem totally opposed to it after I showed him some pictures of the style I'd strive for.
Now I just need to work up the guts and find someone to help me.
