Question Can I use a frozen turkey from last January (and other questions)?

I have a turkey from January 09 in our deep freezer, can I still use it? I think I bought it froze, not fresh. Also, can I cook and refreeze? DH just informed me that he hates turkey, so now I don't know what to do with it.

I was also considering grinding some of it for ground turkey. Can I do this, and if so can I refreeze it raw? There is no way we will eat all of it, but I don't know if it's safe to refreeze meat when it's been frozen before.

Help me not waste this please!

As long as it was in a freezer that has no defrost cycle, it should be safe as long as cooked to 180F. The only thing you might notice is that the flavor is "off" since the proteins have broken down. I would suggest defrost, grind, cook and incorporate into lasagnas or casseroles, which you could then freeze again for up to 3 months. Hubby might be less apt to "hate turkey" if he doesn't know it's there.

A year is the max for whole birds, so if you're going to do something, now is the time

the rule of thumb is 12 months, if it smells "off" while your cooking it then dont eat it, if it smells fine, then it should be fine.

I HATE turkey, however will eat it in cassaroles, so maybe you can make dishes like that for hubby with turkey

I just cooked a turkey from last xmas out of the deep freeze. Turned out perfect. Turkey doesnt freeze well for me, comes out really dry even if it was great going in.

Re: Can I use a frozen turkey from last January (and other questions)?

every year my mom hosts thanksgiving, so she cooks me an extra turkey (I don't know how and I dont know what I would do without her) I freeze it in single meal portions using my foodsaver. I mostly use it for shredded turkey in gravy over mashed potatoes. I've never used it just to have a turkey meal like you would on thanksgiving. As for refreezing uncooked turkey, I don't think thats a good idea for a few reasons but if you cook it first you could then freeze it that way.
