I second the training your kids to play independently. My DS is only 9 months so we are into the exersaucer ($5), toddler bucket swing ($1), board books (25 cents), stacking cups (25 cents), etc. All of which I bought at garage sales for almost nothing.

I love to do garage sales in the spring and summer and have found its a great way to get outdoor toys (well toys and clothes in general) cheep. It also got me out to explore the town when we first moved here. Now I have a group of 2 other mommas who love to go with me because they saw the cool stuff and fun I was having. For starters I got a Fri. paper for garage sale listings and tore the map out from our local phone book (I put this in a plastic page protector). I then map out the Sat. morning sales with strips cut from post it notes so I can plan my trip and save on gas. I have found that labeling the strips with the address, open time, and special interest listings are very helpful.

My daughter is 14mo and this is what we do...

Play with her toys
Walks
Books
Music
Shopping once a week
Leapster
Bubbles
Putting dishes away, she LOVES to help in the kitchen
Backyardigans at 11am
Now that is spring she will come out and help with the garden and flowers (which she loves)
Homemade playdoh

There is alot more.. just cant think of it all
