Wash prefold first?

I just ordered a bunch of unbleached prefolds from LL and was wondering if I need to wash them a certain number of times first or can I go ahead and use them?? (I'm out of diapers and need to use them ASAP) Thanks ladies!

Oh yes! If you sprinkle water on the when they are brand new you will see that they repel. I don't remember the exact number of times they need to be washed but it's probably somewhere around 6-10 times. I think they need to be dried in between too. You can also boil them I think...I boiled some organic flip inserts and it helped, but they still needed to be washed a few times to get up to their regular absorbency.

Re: Wash prefold first?

If they are new, they have to be prepped. Unbleached need to be washed a couple extra times over bleached to remove the natural oils/residue from the cotton. If you don't prep them, they won't be absorbent.
The Little Lions site says 5-10 washes: 2 w/ a little detergent, then plain water for the rest. Dry on high between every or every other wash. http://www.little-lions.com/page17a.html
Green Mountain Diapers recommends 4-5 washes for bleached, 6+ for unbleached. http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/diapers.htm (scroll past the sizing info on this page)

Thanks! I would have had a huge mess on my hands! I couldn't find the prep instructions on the website

You can boil them on the stove and then run them through one wash and dry and you should be good to go. It beats washing and drying a biliion times, that's for sure!

I prepped my LL prefolds according to this thread. I boiled for 30 minutes a batch.

I wash my unbleached prefolds 3 times and dry each time. They still won't be at their max absorbency but they will work fine!
