Moving to KC, MO - Vax-Friendly Ped 4 special needs son

Hello Mamma's,

My family is planning to move to Kansas City, MO this March 2010 and I am looking for a good alternative medicine/vax friendly doc for my son who has DiGeorge Syndrome. We are going to be working closely with Children's Mercy Hospital and about 9 Specialists and I really wanted to find a good naturally minded doc to stand in my corner on the non-vaxing issue.

Can anyone offer ANY suggestions? I'm doing most of my planning via the internet and it's a Big city out there, many miles away from Orlando

Thanks and Blessings!
Erika

Not sure which side of the city you're going to be living on, but we see Dr Robert Sturdevant in Harrisonville, MO. Its about 20 miles south of downtown KC. He's an awesome doctor, and has been willing to go along with what I want for my kids. I've heard the receptionist can be a little, umm, judgmental? Like telling parents that they HAVE to get shots, but I don't bother discussing specifics about what I want to talk to the doctor about with her and just make the appointment to see the Dr S. Dr Sturdevant also does shifts at the Children's Mercy ER occasionally, and in my experience, is always willing to get their opinion on situations if he's unsure.

The only issue I've personally run into is that they won't do a nurseline type thing. If your kid is sick, you have to go in before they'll give any advice. It's a teeny tiny office (Dr S, Nick- the nurse, the receptionist, and occasionally Mrs S is there to do paperwork) so they literally have no time to do phone consults.

I do have personal ties to the office- the nurse is the DH of a good friend of mine. I knew her before I started taking my kids there, but I don't believe that having a personal relationship with the nurse has affected the care we received.

The number is 816-887-1987, if you'd like to call. Good luck!

Yea!!! I got a response!!!! I'll call their office tomorrow and see if they will be willing to help us out. I'm so excited to actually have a lead I can follow up with Thank you so much for your help. We are moving close to the Kansas City/Grandview line, so he may be perfect for us

If you don't mind my asking....do you completely Non-vax or just delay-vax? I've heard some docs will allow you to delay but it's really hard to find one that allows you to reject vaxing entirely. You can email me back if you like: erikabond@gmail.com

We are currently in Grandview! He's about a 20 minute drive from there.

We selectively delay. They've been very nice about it (huge change from our previous pedi- she yelled at me at 5 days postpartum about letting the media sway my parenting and she couldn't be held responsible if my daughter died because I refused a vax! ugh). Personally, I would make an appt to talk to him about it, and lay everything out. I am obviously just assuming here (and you know what they say about assuming things ) but I think he would be extremely understanding of wanting to avoid vaxes considering the DiGeorge Syndrome and that you'll be in close contact with specialists.

Most of the MO mamas are over on the Great Plains board, btw.

Dr Teresa Brady in Lee's summit (on tudor rd) has been WONDERFUL about our delaying. she is the best pedi EVER. We used to see Dr. Harris and Dr. Anath and Dr. Anath actually slammed the door in my face when i told her i wanted to delay with my son. I found Dr. Brady and never looked back!!!!
