How long can yarn be stored in a center pull ball?

I heard somewhere that it streches it out, but that seems a little odd to me. I am not an expert, but figured you crafty ladies would know. So, if my yarn is wound, how long can I keep it that way and then use it without damaging it? And if it stored that way long term, what are the consequences to my future projects? Thanks in advance!

It depends on how tightly it was wound, more than anything, I think. If the yarn wasn't pulled tight, it should be fine indefinitely - no different than a skein. But if it was pulled tighter, it will stretch and stay.

I've heard that too and I don't wind the yarn until I'm ready to use...If I start something and don't finish or buy something that's already wound, I usually "reskein" (I use that term loosely since I am no where near as good at that as the dyers I buy the yarn from!!!)...Hope that helps!

I just knit something that was wound into a cake ball over a year ago and had no issues with it at all. It was HC yarn too.

I just thought of something else - it depends on the fiber, too. Nylon and cotton will stretch out if left tight. Wool isn't going to stretch as easily. Again, though, it depends on how tightly they wound the ball, but usually I've found that if I wind with a ball winder, the tension is just right.
