June 2016: prenatal testing

Is anyone going through testing? Specifically any of the first trimester screenings. I'm on the fence bc my specialist suggested one thing and the Prenatal care group im seeing another. both suggestions are non-invasive. But I feel like I'm going to tick-off one provider by doing the other. Just curious what other moms are doing. Im over 35y if that makes a difference in your response

Re: June 2016: prenatal testing

I'm not pregnant, but TTC. I did the maternal/fetal bloodwork during the first trimester with my last, and found the results to be really comforting. I struggle with anxiety, and while I would not do anything other than have my baby, it really helped me have a more enjoyable pregnancy knowing that there were a few less things to worry about. I was 33 then so I had to pay for it. Since I will be at least 35 when I deliver this time (fingers crossed of course) my insurance will pay for all of it. Just as an FYI

I am 38 so they of course encourage me to do it all too. I've already done the first possible screening (nipt blood test) and am just awaiting the results. I am throughly prepared to go all the way through the amino if necessary. I had an amino for my last pregnancy (it was all that was really offered at the time) too.

I do it because I need to know. I need to be prepared and given time to process. That extra time to prepare could help put us in touch with resources I might not find until so much later. Since we never know just how valuable those resources may be in and for the care of a lo with extra needs and our families, I can't imagine not learning as much in advance as possible.

I had the blood test done at 12 weeks with my son. We had recently had a loss and wanted desperately to know if the baby was healthy. And being over 35, they offered it. It was a bonus to be able to find out it was a boy from the blood test. I can't say if we would have done more testing if something had shown up.

Re: June 2016: prenatal testing

Thank you so much ladies. Did anyone have the maternal/fetal blood test AND have the First trimester blood test (aka sequential screen part 1)?

I had the integrated screening done.... that's the blood test in the 1st and 2nd trimester that is a two part test. I'm not of advanced maternal age. We did get a higher percentage for open neural tube defect.
Our son ended up having Anencephaly. I was still blown off my feet at the U/S that confirmed it but I can't imagine walking into the U/S and getting that news with no warning.

I had the sequential screen with my second child (maternal/fetal with my third). I was told by my doctor that you do the maternal/fetal blood draw in lieu of the sequential screen because the tests are duplicative and the maternal/fetal blood draw is more accurate. I didn't ever do any of my own research on that though, other than the fact that I assumed it was pretty hard to get it wrong when you are actually looking at chromosomes

Good luck with your choice!

Thank you for sharing. Which ultrasound were they able to diagnose it? The 12 week or the 20 week?

Thanks I've attempted my own research bc I was told exactly this. Then one provider said the sequential gives some info that the maternal/fetal doesn't. But I don't know how much I believe that. I greatly appreciate you sharing your experience.
