Is re-lactating possible? Has anyone successfully accomplished this?

DS is ~5 months and has been FF exclusively since about 4 weeks. I had terrible, terrible PPD on the verge of PPP and I stopped for my health and our safety.

But now it's eating me up and I don't want him on formula any longer. I HATE giving him that bottle, but at the time it's what I had to do.

I am on successful anti-depressants and he is no longer colicky (he screamed nearly all day and all night for almost 4 months, which also furthered the depression... but he's so much better now!) so if it's possible, I'd really like to give it everything I've got and try again.

Please give me support. I don't know where to start, what to buy, or who to talk to... or if this is a completely insane, impossible thought.

Can you help me?

Hi Mama! That's great that you want to start breastfeeding again! Just DON'T let yourself feel guilty for doing what you had to at the time for the health and well being of yourself and precious little one. You might want to try to call a local lactation consultant or a la leche league leader to get the best advice on how to get going again. Good luck Mama and hope things work out for you!

Re: Is re-lactating possible? Has anyone successfully accomplished this?

I relactated for my oldest DS when he was 8 months old... I started around 6ish months, my milk had completely dried up 2 months prior.

It took me 2 months of pumping every 2 hours, herbs, domperidone but I got up to 10 oz a day. He wouldn't latch at all, we tried an SNS.

It can be done! It takes as long as since you've last nursed to gain a full milk supply so if it's been 4 months, it'll take about that to get a full supply back.

Like what a PP said, dont feel guilty about having to do what is best for you and your baby! I have horrible PPD and my babies were all very very colicy! I can totally sympathize!
