I didn't try it more upright because at the time I was looking for a convertible for our 4 month old, and while he had reasonable head control I still wanted him darn close to 45 degrees.

A little OT, but I suggest getting a minivan with 6 captains chairs insead of a 3rd row bench seat. We have a bench seat back there, and it can only hold one carseat and no passengers with the seat, it is a big pita. Id much rather have an extra seat back there

I highly recomend the Radian 80, ours came with the infant inserts and we are using the body insert part for our 14 mo old and he sits soo comfortably and I wouldnt hesitate to use it for our infant if I didnt already have a bucket seat we will use first.

I don't really have much advice except I'd wait to buy a seat for the one you are pregnant with if you plan on having more kids...that way it'll last longer.
