Replacing seats after a minor accident?

I know you are supposed to replace seats after an accident, but does that stand true even if its just a very minor accident?

Yep... any jar to the seats can cause stress fractures or spots in the plastic of the seat and that could be bad if another BIG accident were to happen. Take a look at your insurance... they could cover it and most do.

Re: Replacing seats after a minor accident?

The NHTSA holds a different position:

Quote:
NHTSA recommends that child safety seats be replaced following a moderate or severe crash in order to ensure a continued high level of crash protection for child passengers.

NHTSA recommends that child safety seats do not automatically need to be replaced following a minor crash.

Minor crashes are those that meet ALL of the following criteria:

-The vehicle was able to be driven away from the crash site;

-The vehicle door nearest the safety seat was undamaged;

-There were no injuries to any of the vehicle occupants;

-The air bags (if present) did not deploy; AND

-There is no visible damage to the safety seat

Re: Replacing seats after a minor accident?

If it was me, I'd have insurance replace them. They may not want to, but I'm sure if you ask them to sign a waiver stating that they take full responsibility should the seat fail in a future accident, well, I'm sure they'll cough up the money for replacement seats.

You can't see damage to plastic always, and that's why I would want them replaced.

I don't follow NHTSA over manufacturer's recommendations. All manufacturers other than Britax say to replace after any accident.

The NHTSA rules can be interpreted somewhat loosely. The only manfacturer that follows those guidelines is Britax, but Britax also has their own Crashed Restraint Replacement Program. All other manufacturers say to replace after any crash.
