Re: Water birth question: do you get cold?

I was cold with my first birth, which was out of the water.

My other two, nope.

My 3rd I do remember saying "I'm cold" and the MW just added some hot water to the bath and then poured water with a cup over my back/chest/arms and I warmed up right away. It was no big deal.

Really, with a water birth, typically, you are not getting in the tub, at, like 5 cm. You are getting in JUST as transition/pushing stage comes along... or even just pushing. You also find yourself getting out b/c you feel like you need to poop, or wanting to get out to stand, or just wanting to move. There are plenty of opportunities to adjust the temperature.

It also helps that the ambient temperature in the room is kept warm, like 78+ degrees.

Yikes I can't imagine dealing with 98 degree water.

I had a waterbirth and was NOT cold. I spent the first hour of labor in the tub & then got back in again at the end (maybe 20 minutes before pushing). Dp refilled it partially before I got in again because it had cooled down. We have thermostats in every room and I don't think we touched any of them really. Normal room temp was fine.

They can control the temperature to however you like, but usually it is hot. it feels good when you are in a lot of pain.

I did get cold. I was in my own bath tub, as I had not planned a waterbirth, at all. When I got cold, we just turned the hot water back on.

I actually got hot in my bath and had to ask my midwife to put some cold water in. And if it starts to cool down, she can let some of the water out while adding more hot water.

God bless!

Absolutely not! I labored for most of the birth in the birthing tub at the birth center...probably around 4 hours and I was sweating bullets the entire time. Once I birthed and got out of the tub I felt the water with my hand and the water was ice cold. I didn't notice one bit. Your body is working out so much and with such intensity, you seriously don't notice and I generally NEED my bath water to be steaming hot to wear my skin burns slightly and turns pink. So the fact the it didn't bother me actually amazed me.
