Baby wants to eat but I'm not ready!

Baby wants to eat but I'm not ready!
My almost 5-month-old daughter has recently started reaching for anything we eat and eyeing our food like a hawk… Or a vulture. She is EBF and we cloth diaper. I had planned to try to delay introducing solids because EBF poop is so much easier to clean!!! I am in no hurry to introduce solids, but I'm starting to worry that baby is going to want them. Is there any harm in delaying the introduction of solid foods if baby wants it!? I don't want to deny her, but it's so much easier to wait!!! Also, I have never cloth diapered before. Is the transition to solid foods really as bad as I'm expecting?? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks

Solids before 1 is more about exploration than anything so waiting wont hurt. As far as cleaning diapers go it stinks at first Im not going to lie (especially when they are EBF with just a little bit of solids) but once you get a method down its not so bad.

There is one possible harm to delaying, but it's sort of still being figured out - new research is showing that delaying may encourage allergies to certain foods. They recommended holding off on potential allergens for so long, and now they are thinking that may actually have caused more allergies than prevented. Now they are saying let your baby try as wide of a range of foods as you can at 4 mos (which doesn't add up with the recommendation of no solid foods til 6 mos, but whatever...). I'm planning on discussing it with my pediatrician at LO's 4mo appt coming up soon.

Also, I'm totally scared of the poop from real food!y MIL babysat one day last week and I noticed she rinsed all my diapers before putting them in the pail, which we don't have to do yet, but I forgot to explain much to her. Ew

But, like I said, it's still being researched, and I still want to talk to my pediatrician about it first. I'm just also really scared about having a child with a food allergy. They do NOT look fun to deal with, so I'm inclined to want to try sampling a lot early. Like kmrotski said, it's really about exploring, not trying to sustain them at this point, so I would guess sampling things is what we'll try.

Hmm those studies are really interesting. I wonder how the numbers stack up for allergies in breastfed babies versus formula babies. I have always been inclined to think that MOST breastfed babies get more immunity from their mothers and also tend to eat a less processed diet. I expect those factors would have an impact as well.

Good question. I think breast feeding is promoted more now than it was 20-50 yrs ago, but not sure what affect it has had on food allergies

I think the key to introducing solids is liners! Pulls up the solids and leaves the ever familiar poop I've come to expect. My pediatrician gave me a list of what to introduce before a year, for the reasons discussed. I dreaded introducing solids, but it has been fine.

Grovia Bioliners are my go to! About $10 and large enough to cover the diapers. Love!
