Car seat shopping and I'm clueless!

Do you mean when you play with it with latch you can pick the whole seat up an inch or two? or just the top of the seat?

IF it's the whole seat, that's not good. When testing it at the belt path it shouldn't move more than an inch in any direction. The top of the seat moving is a safety feature called cocooning, it's supposed to disperse the crash energies so they don't act on your child.

I'm going to have to take some pics. If I grasp it at the top, I can lift the entire seat up so that its almost vertical. This happens in both the truck and the car. Worse in the car in an outer seat than in the middle.

That is totally normal for the Comfy Carry. I have one and I admit it is disconcerting that the entire back of the seat can lift off the base. However, that is just how that seat is designed.

Is that safe? It happens with the base and without when using the seat belt. But doesn't happen when using the base with LATCH.

So long as it's good and tight at the belt path yes. It's supposed to snap up. Disconcerting, yes, unsafe no.

It may just be something with the seat design, but sometimes, you can install by pushing the seat into the vehicle seat back more than down into the bottom, and that will help that flippage a little. Not that it's unsafe, at all, but I understand the feeling.
