HELP!! DR refusing to order further labs...!! Iron Infusion via IV???

SEE MY UPDATES IN POSTS 19 & 20...

Don't know where to put this, but I'm towards the end of my pregnancy and this is related, so here it goes.

I'm a redhead and have always struggled with anemia to some degree or the other.

This time it's low. We're talking 29. The norms are 50-155 something.

I do not tolerate processed forms of iron at all, we're talking severe constipation.

I'm eating spinach and taking Mountain Meadow Herbs Herbal Iron and feeling ok. Not great by any means, just ok.

Just read alfalfa is supposed to be good. What else?

Anyone have experience with iron infusion? How did your body respond? Dr told me my body will either feel really good or really bad. Not very comforting!

Re: Iron Infusion via IV???

I haven't had the infusion, but my midwife told me to eat eggs, red meats, and leafy greens. I would also have some molasses.

I have always had serious issues with processed iron and always seem to run low. Floradix was recommended to me by several midwives and doctors over the years and I never had issues with it. It taste kind of like juice (comes in pill form as well) and isn't too expensive. I would try that first before I would do the IV unless it is dangerous for you or baby to wait.

Iron from most plant sources only absorbs at around 5%, versus around 30% for animal-based sources. Combining the two will increase absorption of both. You need to be eating meat and start cooking in cast iron cookware. Make sure to eat your high iron foods with vitamin c rich foods to increase absorption and not to eat it with calcium rich foods, which binds to iron.

Re: Iron Infusion via IV???

All good advice, I'm trying to keep it up. My Dr has me scheduled for 2 infusions. The first is a week from tomorrow. The more I read the more I do not want to go through with it. I'd rather go back to taking my ferrous sulfate tablets and deal with constipation. The moment I start having a reaction I'm stopping the infusion. I already have slight PUPPS and boy is that itchy. It never went away fully after one of my babies was born 3.5 years ago. Common complaint is getting a rash or feeling itchy with the infusion. No thank you.

What is your hemoglobin? I'm assuming low if your iron is that low. Would doc consider a blood transfusion instead of an iron transfusion?

Re: Iron Infusion via IV???

I do not know what my hemoglobin is, I'd have to call and ask. Not at all interested in a blood transfusion let alone an iron infusion. Too drastic in my opinion. Now, if my condition were life threatening, sure. But they didn't rush me into ER to get anything done and my appt was scheduled 2 weeks out. I'd say that's not an emergency.

On a positive note. After spending way more time than ever on the internet researching and trying to see if there's something I've missed all these years in regards to upping your iron, I stumbled upon a product called Blood Builder. It's sold on Amazon and also at our local health food grocery store. The reviews are very encouraging! I quickly ran out and bought a bottle and also their Women's Daily One. I'm currently taking 6 Blood Builder tablets a day. Started yesterday. This morning I woke up feeling......really good! Like I'm running circles around my children! Normally after only 5 hours of sleep I'd be dragging my feet. All Glory to GOD alone!!

I'll keep everyone posted on how I feel and if the energy and overall feeling great continues.

Was able to call the Dr office and get my lab numbers. Not as bad as they were making it out to be. IMHO

Hemoglobin 8.4
Hematocrit 28.7
