Help with easy fabric dyeing for a portable craft

Is there a way to do simple fabric dyeing at an upcoming Girl Scout event? not tie dyeing, just a craft that involves fabric dyeing. It needs to be easy, cheap, not too messy and portable for a couple dozen girls at a Girl Scout event.

The goal is to do a VERY simple simulation of batik dyeing. Girls would be given a small square of cotton fabric, draw a design on it with a white crayon, then dye the fabric. Ideally, the dye will not go where the wax was. Then they dip the fabric in the dye, wring it out, let it air dry and come back to get it at the end of the event. Their design will be white and the surrounding fabric the color of the dye.

How to do this simply? If the fabric squares need to be soaked over heat, that's not going to be possible at this busy event. I can presoak the fabric to help the dye stick. I can buy any kind of cloth that will work best. I could probably let the fabric soak for 20 minutes or so not over heat.

Any advice or hints? Or just skip it?
