3 across?

Quick question for you mamas with multiple carseats.

A friend of mine is expecting twins this summer and has a 2 1/2 year old. He currently has a Britax 85 SICT and they LOVE it.

The vehicle is a Hyundai Santa Fe (2002) They cant afford to buy a bigger car at the moment. Is it possible to safely get 3 carseats across the back seat?

Starting with the Frontier and 2 infant seats, then eventually it would be the Britax and 3 convertables. They dont want to get a cheapie Costco seat.. so seat recs must be good, safe brands. any help would be appreciated!

Re: 3 across?

I have a Kia Sorento which I think it about the same size. I can fairly easily get three across in my backseat, especially if one is rearfacing (the center seat). When I have three, I have one of these two combos, either a Frontier 85, a Advocate 70 and a Roundabout 55 or a Frontier 85 and two Advocate 70's. So, my guess is that if they put the Frontier 85 in the middle and the buckets outboard, they'd be ok...it may depend on the bucket though (no advice on which ones as I only used one for a short time, and it was in my old car).

Re: 3 across?

They can almost certainly get 3 across, though the Frontier may have to go. Even similarly-sized cars vary GREATLY in how much space the back seat actually has, and the placement of seat belts/LATCH anchors, and the shape of the vehicle cushions can also affect what seats will work with 3 across.

Your friend's best bet is to go to Babies R Us (or another store that carries lots of car seats, Buy Buy Baby is a better choice but not as common) and try a bunch of seats in her car. I'd focus on the infant seats first, also cross-referencing the list from carseatblog of seats that are good for low birth weight babies, since twins are often in that category. ( Link to the list I mentioned; note it is almost 2 years old, so there are bound to be some newer seats that aren't on the list right now but would be good for small babies.)

Often it is easier to get 3 across if you use seatbelts to install the seats rather than LATCH, and often one configuration will work (eg putting both infant seats outboard and the other seat in the center) when another (eg putting the infant seats next to each other and the other seat outboard) will not work. So your friend should plan to spend a good amount of time experimenting. It is good to first get a general idea of space by just putting the seats in there, but then to confirm that a 3 across does work, all seats need to be installed and checked that they are independently tight (that is, if you remove one seat, the others stay tight).

Re: 3 across?

The combi cocorro fits 3 across and so does the Diono Radian. Here is a great link to read about these: http://www.lucieslist.com/best-convertible-car-seats/

Re: 3 across?

Thank you all so much for all the helpful info

Regarding the Radian, do you think once the babies are out of infant seats, they could fit the Frontier in the center and a radian on either side?

Re: 3 across?

Possibly, but possibly not. The only way to know for sure is to try it (or find someone else that has tried it). Plus Radians are difficult to install sometimes, and actually incompatible with some cars. I don't know how well they work in the Santa Fe.
