do you know gem personally?
If so I would just tell them they are putting their child in danger. If not call the police non emergency line and report?? I don't know. People do really dumb things with regards to cars and kids

This. I have a hard enough time not butting in on the little things with carseats...that's crazy.

No I don't know them personally :-/
It's one of
My daughters classmates. When I dropped her off she said "See ____ gets to ride up front and it's safe for him!" I looked over and sure enough...

Many states have laws against kids riding in the front unless there is no other safe option. But depending on the state that might not be the case. In MI a child over 4 can legally ride in the front. I would check that for your state and you may be able to tell them it is illegal.

Do these people seem like those types of people that just don't consider or know how dangerous that is, or do you think they just don't care?

I agree with this. If it is against the law in your state for a 4 year old to be riding in the front seat then I'd leave a note on their windshield with the law. Even if it's not against the law, if there is a front passenger air bag it could injury their child significantly in the event of an accident.

Re: 4 year old in front seat

Are there really laws against children in the front seat in some places? I live in Sweden where it is very common to have children ride in the front seat. Provided the airbags are turned off and the child is properly restrained in a car or booster seat, the front seat is considered to be as safe or even safer than the back. Parents wanting to keep their kids rear-facing longer will often do it in the front seat because it gives kids a bit more leg room compared to the back seat. It's also easier for a driver to attend to a kid in the front seat so the thought is that the driver is less likely to become distracted. I always find the differences in what is/isn't considered to be safe in different areas to be so interesting. If having children in the front seat is illegal in your area, then mentioning that to the family would be appropriate. If no law is being broken, I'd just leave it alone.

no no no. Here a good number of cars do not have airbags that can be turned off so it is very dangerous to have kids under 12 in the front seat. Very dangerous. It's an absolute last resort type of thing and you CAN NOT put a rear facing seat there at all.

Is it possible to let the school know about your child's classmate? Maybe they could talk with the parents?

Best of Luck!
