DS (first grade) is doing Saxon Math 1 this year. I'm not really loving it, it seems to textbook-y and wordy. I'm thinking I'll probably switch him over to Math U See next year. I just I'm not sure which level to choose?

I don't want him to be lost and way behind but I also don't want him to be bored and repeating a lot of information.

They have a placement test you can take. It really depends on what he's already covered. I am thinking probably Beta.

Does Saxon use the rods/manipulatives like MUS? If anything... even though he might race through the Primer, it would give him a good foundation for using their manipulatives... You can go at your own pace... if you find the first lesson is too easy you could easily skip through as many lessons as you want in each day... just a thought... although, if money is an issue... I might not want to spend the money on Primer to only find out you could have skipped it....

THIS... you could also buy a 2nd hand student book & teacher DVD to save money... that way it would be as much of a cash outlay if you did end up needing to move up.

Their website does list what is covered in each book, so you could look and see that way which one looks like a good match.

If you decide you want the alpha, I have the teacher's manual and DVD you may have.
